DURHAM, See of Azure, a cross or, between four lions rampant argent. [The mitre over the arms is encircled with a ducal coronet.]

[Recorded in the College of Arms.]

The earliest use of these arms was by Bishop Robert Nevili, 1438-57, but an older form of the arms is with a cross patonce.
