Mantling is something which encloses the shield and appears behind it, originally it was a cloak but other types of mantling are supported. For clarity you should use phrasing such as mantling of a cloak or Napoleanic mantling.

The word mantling on its own produces the mantling of ribbons.

Mantling Colours

All mantling variations have fixed colours except for the following:

  • mantling of ribbons
  • mantling of a cloak
  • mantling of a cloak ermine

In these cases you may specify colours, for example:

mantling of ribbons gules - red and grey

mantling of ribbons gules and or - red and gold. You may also use lined or doubled instead of 'and' for heraldic accuracy.

You can also specify separate colours for each side (this can be effective with dimidiated or per pale shields that have clearly different colours each side).

mantling of ribbons to the dexter gules and or to the sinister azure and vert
