Italian Somalia was a protectorate and later colony of the Kingdom of Italy from 1889 until 1941, when it was occupied by the British military during World War 2. In 1950, Somalia was again assigned under the administration of Italy (now a Republic) as a Trust Territory by the U.N., and finally became an independent nation in 1960.
