Notes
Argent, between three ravens sable a chevron sable. The arms of Rhys ap Gruffydd, a 16th-century Welsh nobleman whose family latterly held Dinefwr Castle--once the primary stronghold of the House of Dinefwr, kings of Deheubarth--under the aegis of the English crown. Rhys' grandfather, Rhys ap Thomas, was a loyal supporter of Henry VII and is said by some to have personally delivered the killing blow to Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth; Rhys ap Gruffydd, however, rebelled against Henry VIII, and plotted with James V of Scotland to have himself installed as Prince of Wales. The rebellion collapsed quickly, and Rhys was executed. More recent historians have suggested that Rhys was innocent of the charge of treason and never plotted with the Scots; rather, he had simply become an inconvenience to Henry VIII and was judicially murdered as were so many of the king's erstwhile friends.
