Bastard son of the pious and modest lord Thiery de St-Malo, still very young at 14 he left the house of his father. Born with an hard temper and flaming character, he fighted as a soldier of fortune and soon created his own battalion, the Black Company. He served as a bannerman in the field of three great battles, but he is mostly remembered for his infamous defeat in Metzingen, when his company fled under the charge of Ludwig von Schwanstein; after this fact, this shield was appointed with the lion coward as a patch of dishonour.
