When having a seal made be sure to require the maker to hammer the top of the ring prior to engraving. The hammering condenses and compresses the material leaving no room for porosity , which in turn vastly improves the carving qualities.
There was a time when this would have been standard practice but as handwork becomes less common so too does the memory of the benefits of this important step. Nowadays you need to ask for this to be done.
