WESTMORELAND.
WESTMORELAND. Has no armorial bearings. In the published sheet headed
" The Arms of the Counties of England and Wales," is a most ludicrous achievement, namely, " Azure, a carbuncle or, on an escutcheon of pretence the arms of England, i.e., gules, three lions passant guardant or." If reference be made to the description of the seal of Appleby, which is doubtless the origin, the e.xtent of the joke will perhaps be appreciated.
