This is actually accurate because the white pattern starts at one third of the length of the flag from the fly as the law specifies. That also has the effect, that the pattern can be viewed as composed of conjoined, not overlapping perfectly square tiles. Check the photos on the Wikipedia page, not the inaccurate SVG drawing.

On Wikipedia there are two versions of the flag: one with the leftmost edge of the zig-zag pattern lying on the imaginary central vertical line (that puts the inner edge at 1/3 of the distance from the fly) and the other at 4/9 (the translucent white version). Neither of them fits the description found on the same Wikipedia page: The pattern occupies one-third of the flag. The drawing in this post does :)
