Jesses. Short straps to tie the bells on the legs of a hawk, in which were fixed the varvels, or little rings, and to these was fastened the leash, or long strap by which the Falconer held her on his hand. See a Falcon's leg belled, jessed and varvellcd. P. 33, f. 34.
